Trump Deploys Troops to Portland Amid Controversy Over ICE Facility Protection

President Donald Trump has directed the deployment of U.S. troops to Portland, Oregon, aiming to protect federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities from what he describes as attacks by domestic terrorists, including Antifa.

 

In a recent statement, Trump announced, "At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists." He further emphasized, "I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary."

 

This decision follows a series of incidents targeting ICE facilities, notably a recent attack in Dallas where a gunman opened fire on an ICE field office, resulting in casualties among detainees. The administration has cited these events as justification for increased federal intervention.

 

However, the move has sparked significant backlash from Oregon's leadership. Governor Tina Kotek and Attorney General Dan Rayfield have filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the troop deployment, arguing it infringes upon state sovereignty and is based on exaggerated claims. Governor Kotek stated, "Our communities are safe and calm. We will have further comment when we have more information."

 

Portland Mayor Keith Wilson echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the city had not requested federal assistance and expressing concern over the potential for escalating tensions. "The number of necessary troops is zero," Wilson remarked, highlighting the city's efforts to manage public safety independently.
